What most damages computers are their frequent restarts, so avoid them unless you intend to be away for several days.
Basically, if you use your computer daily, we recommend not using the "Turn off" option – complete shutdown of the system.
You can safely put it in the PC "Stand by" – this option only interrupts the work of individual components and aggregates, but maintains the system in standby, i. e. when you restart your computer, it is not required to scan the system and all installed programs and hardware again.
You can put your computer in "Stand by" – this option interrupts only the work of individual components and aggregates, but maintains the system in standby, i. e. when you restart your computer, it is not required to scan the system and all installed programs and hardware again.
This means that you load the CPU and RAM memory less, respectively, which extends their life. It would be better even not to turn off your computer (refer to those who use it every day), than to run it in the morning and totally shut it down every night. This manipulation damages the machine the most. After all, this is technique designed to work with long hours!
If you want to free your computer from unnecessary files, I recommend you to use the program CleanCache 3.0 (from find.pcworld.com/53864). This free program can quickly remove clutter and temporary files on Windows, cache files on the browser, all unnecessary Office documents, etc.
When I use the program, I prefer to perform cleaning system option ”Clean Checked Items”, rather than „Run Complete Cleanup”, to avoid mistakenly deletion of some important file.
Cleaning the system is good to be done at least once a month.
Never open attachments in messages from unknown sender. If you do not know the name in the „From” field, do not open the attachment. If you receive an unexpected message with a strange attachment from a known sender, it could contain a virus. Many worms are distributed to all contacts found in the infected computer. Such mails have often a bizarre subject or name of the attachment.
Often, this is a joke message encouraging the recipient to see the picture or to read the attached text file. Always ask for confirmation from the sender before opening the message or attachment of this kind. Check the full name of the attachment. Hidden extensions of the file name can mislead you into opening an infected attachment from email. Always check if the email application displays the full name of the attachment, including the extension. Viruses and worms may be contained in files that look like pictures, for example with the extension. .jpg. But it is possible to have a hidden file extension like .exe or .vbs with the file name, which means that the attachment is not a picture, but a program that will start after opening the attachment. Beware of false warnings about viruses. False warnings about viruses are known as "hoaxes". This is a kind of chain letter, which mislead consumers into believing that they have received a virus and encourages them to forward the warning to all acquaintances. Do not open spam. E-mails containing unsolicited advertising can be used to carry viruses and worms. For security reasons, you should remove all advertisements from an unknown sender immediately without opening them.
Prolonged exposure to excessive heat may prematurely damage the system.
Blue screen and slow hard drives are the classic warning signs of overheating and should solve the problem immediately. Start by removing the dust on your computer.
Clogged vent can increase the temperature in the box. Do not pile papers on the computer, the monitor and peripherals, as it worsens ventilation of the devices.
Did you need to open a file sent by a user switched to the new office suite Office 2007 and find out that your version of Microsoft Office cannot open files sent from it?
All programs use the new office suite (.xml) format which is not supported by older Office applications.
You will identify the files in Office 2007 by that, that their file extensions contain the letter “x” at the end – .docx documents for Word, .xlsx for Excel. .pptx for PowerPoint.
There is an easy way to open and save office documents with the new .xml format without having to buy Office 2007 package for all computers in your office.
You need only to download and install the compatibility pack from Microsoft and things will work. The package can be downloaded from HERE
1. Certainly, in the first place, it is important to install an antivirus program that has the capabilities and protection from spyware and real-time scanner on your computer. Larger manufacturers offer on their sites free versions, which are not so functional, but still work.
2. Keep track of whether antivirus software is updated (at least once a day from the site of the manufacturer) with the latest virus definitions.
3. Weekly scan your entire computer with an antivirus program.
4. Do not open emails from unknown sources and do not forget that every attachment is potentially unsafe. When receiving the email with attachment, always scan the file before opening it, even if the sender is known to you.
5.If you receive an email asking you to confirm a password, do not be deceived to do it. There are many emails where you should fill your data from your credit card and they are trying to persuade you that these emails are sent from your bank, e-commerce website and others. These emails are seemingly conclusive, but if you look closer, you will see an incorrect word order, misspellings, etc. They have links to copies of the original sites, on which you have registered. No company will send you letters after a period demanding you to renew the data.
6. Sometimes, while browsing the Internet suddenly on your screen appears a pop-up window that indicates a virus on your computer and asks you to download software and install it. I am very astonished, but this method works and people are caught in this trap. Do not do it. 100% guarantee, that this is malware.
7. Another dangerous aspect is the use of Skype or other communication devices. Be careful who from and what files you are accepting. There are times when one of your friends is already infected and his Skype automatically send infected files.
8. Internet is a dangerous place. Be careful who you share personal information with.
Be sure in one thing: Nobody will help you for free. So when you are asked to click on a link that ensures earning $ 50,000, do not be deceived. There is no free lunch!
